Luke 24
The first day of the week,
The women came to the grave where Jesus was laid,
To anoint his body,
But they found the stone was rolled away.
The tomb was empty,
And suddenly two angels appeared and said unto them,
Why are you looking for the living among the dead?
He is not here, He is risen,
He is not here, He's risen from the dead.
Remember what he told you,
When he was still with you in Galilee,
That the son of man must be delivered,
Into the hands of sinful men,
And be crucified and on the third day He would rise again.
Then they remembered Jesus words,
And left to go and tell these things,
To the eleven and to all of those that were with them.
It was Mary Magdalene,
And Joana and Mary the mother of James,
And other women that were with them,
Who told them all of these things.
And their words seemed to them as idle tales,
And they believed them not.
Then Peter ran to the tomb and stooped down,
Saw the linen clothes there lying,
And then he wondered in himself at what had taken place.
Two of them were on the road to Emmaus,
Going home, they were cast down,
When Jesus drew near and walked with them,
But they didn't know who he was.
He asked them what they were speaking of,
They said are you the only one,
From Jerusalem who does not know,
What things have happened there.
Then Jesus asked them what things,
And they said unto him,
Of Jesus of Nazareth,
Who was a prophet mighty in deed and word,
Before God and all of the people,
And how the chief priests and our rulers,
Delivered Him to be condemned,
And sentenced Him to death,
And have crucified Him.
But we hoped he would redeem Israel,
And this is the third day since then.
And some women came and told us,
They went to the tomb and found it empty,
And found no body,
But told us that angels told them that he was alive.
Then some of our companions went to see,
They found the tomb and it was empty,
As the women had told us,
But him they did not see.
Then Jesus said how foolish you are,
And slow of heart,
To believe all the prophets have spoken,
That Christ had to suffer these things,
And to enter into His glory.
Then beginning with Moses and all of the prophets,
He expounded to them,
What was said about him in the scriptures,
And as they neared home,
They urged him to come and stay with them.
And while at the table Jesus took bread,
And blessed it and broke it and gave it to them,
And then their eyes were opened and they knew him,
And then he disappeared.
They said did not our hearts burn within us,
As he talked with us and opened the scriptures to us,
And then they returned back to Jerusalem,
Found the eleven and those that were with them,
Saying, it's true, the Lord is risen,
The Lord is risen indeed!
They told how Jesus had walked with them,
And what had happened on the way,
And how that he was known to them,
In the breaking of bread.
While they were speaking, Jesus himself,
Stood in their midst and said unto them,
Peace be with you,
But they were frightened,
And thought they had seen a spirit.
He said why are you troubled?
And why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
Behold my hands and my feet,
It is I, handle me and see,
For a spirit has not flesh and bones,
As you see in me.
Then he showed them his hands and feet,
And while they yet did not believe,
For joy and wondered and then he asked,
Have you here any meat?
They gave him a piece of fish and honeycomb,
He ate it before them and then he said,
These are the words I had spoken to you,
While I was still with you,
That all things must be fulfilled,
Written in the law of Moses,
And in the prophets and the psalms, concerning me.
Then he opened their understanding,
That they might understand the scriptures,
He said it is written that Christ had to suffer,
And rise from the dead the third day.
That repentance and remission of sins should be preached,
In his name among all nations,
Beginning at Jerusalem.
And you are witnesses of these things,
I will send the promise of my Father,
But stay in Jerusalem until you have been,
Endued with power from on high.
Then he led them out as far as Bethany,
Lifted his hand and he blessed them,
It came to pass he was parted from them,
And lifted up into heaven.
And they worshipped him and returned to Jerusalem,
With great joy, and there they continued in the temple,
Praising and blessing God, amen.
The Lord is risen,
The Lord is risen,
The Lord is risen indeed!
